Long Lawford Primary School Expansion

PROPOSAL ON THE PRINCIPAL OF INCREASING CAPACITY AT LONG LAWFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL

Introduction

There is currently a consultation on the proposal concerning Long Lawford Primary School,  this is part of a statutory consultation process that Warwickshire County Council is managing in partnership with the Governing Body.  The proposal is:

1)    To increase the capacity at Long Lawford Primary School from 2 forms of entry to 3 forms of entry from September 2017. The published admission number (PAN) will increase from 60 to 90, meaning the overall capacity of the school will eventually rise to 630 pupils.

Why Change?

The Strategic Planning Team reviewed options for the future development of the schools in the area and the decision was taken to start consultation on a formal basis.

The proposed increase in capacity at Long Lawford Primary School is related to the general rise in the population of primary aged pupils living in the priority area, which is the result of the higher birth rate, new housing developments and inward migration being experienced by the County as a whole.

Recent data demonstrate a 29.3% increase in the number of children starting school in Rugby over the past 8 years, and the County Council has a statutory obligation to provide sufficient school places for all pupils.  Current projections indicate that additional capacity will be required and it is proposed that extra places are provided at Long Lawford Primary School.  Long Lawford Primary School already has a ‘bulge class’ which is moving in to year 1 in September 2017 and will carry on through the school until leaving the end of Year 6. These proposals would see the school take in 3 Reception classes every year on a formal basis.

Building consequences

This letter concerns the statutory process of increasing the capacity from 420 to 630.  Clearly this will require changes and extensions to the existing school building. However, this will be subject to a separate process and will be linked to the submission of an application for planning permission.

What is the proposed timetable?

  • 5th September 2016 – 18th October 2016: Consultation with parent and the local community to take into account the views expressed regarding the proposals to increase in capacity.

  • 10th November 2016: If the Cabinet agree to the proposals, the decision will begin to be implemented from October 2016 with the expansion being completed in time for the new intake in September 2017
